Overseas Chinese are encountering increased anti-Chinese bigotry as a rising tide of racism abroad, particularly in SE Asia, is starting to resemble the tensions that led up to the Indonesian anti-Chinese riots 20 years ago. Envy, racism, and a bit of Islamic agitation led Indonesia into its anti-Chinese riots of 1998.

Today, from Manila to Sri Lanka, a growing fear of a rising, more aggressive, China as well as a CCP that demands racial loyalty of overseas Chinese is combining to create a serious threat to Chinese communities abroad. One has to live in fantasyland to think aggressive PLA moves in the South China Sea combined with CCP influence operations through United Front organs meant to tilt other nation's policies towards the CCP won't bring violent pushback in SE Asia.

We are closer to 1938, start of a Great War, than 1988, leading up to the fall of Berlin Wall. In every global conflict there is a global loser. Should tensions with China grow or God forbid a conflict develop it may well be Chinese abroad who become the next global loser.

Think anyone in Manila or Memphis is gonna be up for a lion dance should a PLA SSM slam into a Filipino or US Navy ship? Why would overseas Chinese escape the wrath of bigotry when Muslims the world over still wear 9/11?

The rise of China is bringing insecurity and unease in Asia and the United States. The aggressive actions of the Chinese Communist Party(CCP) are stoking fears and allowing the bigots and race hustlers that exist in many societies to come to the surface.

Worse yet, a CCP that is hell-bent on retaining influence in other nations, such as we are seeing in Australia, through ethnic Chinese communities, is bringing into question the loyalty of Chinese immigrants. The CCP is using overseas Chinese as a political wedge in nearly every nation where a Chinese community of any size resides. Even in the United States we are seeing CCP activities that are starting to catch the attention of the US government.

The very premise of such loyalty questions seem quite out of date in 2018. But no one said life was fair. As we're constantly told there is anti-Chinese racism already in many societies, by what logic will that not get worse should there be a conflict with China or the CCP continues to use Chinese communities to undermine other nations.

The elimination of bigotry might be a bit beyond my grasp in terms of advice to give to overseas Chinese, yet one can take steps to lessen hostility in adopted nations, one of which is for overseas Chinese not to be CCP stooges.
